The world moves by gold and might and through the centuries the Ueda Clan had proved themselves to be capable with both though with the changing tides, the leader of this noble clan saw it fit, despite arguments from his counselors, to align his house with that of a powerful clan from the West.  The notion was unheard of but Sho Ueda saw profit and power in the alliance. He put so much faith in it that he willingly offered his first daughter to be married to the only heir to the Torelle Clan.  It was a union that would cement the agreement. And a union that never came to be.

Wars have come and gone.  Cities build, destroyed and rebuilt.  And now Sho Ueda had heard news of events in a city in the eastern part of the United States that had prompted him to ask for a meeting with Marcus Torelle.

Ueda Clan

He had heard the rumors as well and he had two guesses who it could be. He may be old and considered senile by the younger members of the clan, but unlike his younger years, he listened more than acted nowadays. Realization of how much he had hurt his own daughter had changed him, at least on the inside. It was why he gave his other children more freedom but that too had its own consequences. They were not as strong as Seki or Sayuri. They could hold their own in a fight but his first borns had a different spirit to them. No matter how much his pride hated his daughter's defiance of not agreeing to kill herself for honor, he could at least admit he admired her stubborness and resilience to still keep on living.

Getting to talk to her was more than imperative now. He would have to lay the work to ensure his daughter's affairs remain separate from his own as much as he wanted to lay claim to it. He had disowned her and by all rights, her own dealings were her own. She was not obliged to him or even the clan and given that she had now allied herself with Randell meant that her loyalties would be to him before anyone else. It was a complicated web.

Sho nodded. "I agree. It will be impressed upon all those in the Ueda clan that their business in America is their own. And anything that we can offer we are more than willing to share with you. My niece and her family are skilled in the arts of both war and healing as you very well know. Both healing of the mind, and body. I will inform her that your men may be requesting the services of her house. And as always, any Torelle is welcome in any of our safehouses."

“As a matter of honor, the Torrelle Clan shall not break the bonds of allegiance between our two great dynasties. But there are rumors floating that others from your clan pursuing Sayuri and Randell in the states. For the sake of our pact, if there are any truths to these rumors, it is requested that they be left in peace. If our clans are to be finally united with their union, we can ill afford interference from either side.”

Marcus again playing the diplomat. If their two clans were to finally merge, becoming on cohesive unit, then their power worldwide would be even more legendary. In truth, the Torrelles did not need the Ueda’s clan for power or wealth, but the sheer influence of the two joined would be significant. And now with Randell gaining allies throughout America, it was only a matter of time before their power reached the far corners of the world.

“Marcus, enough of personal matters… “ His wife interrupted. “We have more urgent matters that need attending.”

“She is right, Sho… Set’s forces are gathering in number, preparing for war. We need every asset you can muster in the aid. We must strike hard at his followers, take out as many as possible. Weaken his defenses. And when the final battle comes to pass, we need soldiers on the battlefield.”

Sho wasn't the least bit surprised that Marcus was well aware of his errant daughters involvement with their son. What surprised him was any knowledge of what had transpired after the fateful day of a much awaited wedding that never came to pass. In truth, it was both foolish pride on his part to have thrown his beloved daughter to the dungeons. It was a dishonor and rumors were hard to silence. As much as he loved Sayuri, he did not have the luxury of silencing tongues when he needed soldiers. She was made as an example and things would have been far easier if she had been the dutiful daughter to the end and taken her own life. Now the complications would start to unravel and if those before him were from a lesser clan he would have told them that it was clan business. Sayuri is his daughter, his blood. He had every right to do with her what he pleased. But this was politics and things had to be done a bit more delicately.

"It was a decision that I made with some haste. And one I regret and in truth hold bitterness to. At the time, there was no other possibility that presented itself except for the fact that Sayuri had done something to displease your son. She held her silence, not once uttering a reason that your son, honorably, had withdrawn from the union for personal reasons. As I have expressed centuries ago, when it comes to the arrangement between our children, it was a union meant to unite our clans, not to drive them apart. I have lost a daughter because of my haste .... and my foolishness." It was a word he did not wish to use but in his old age, memories of a time when his little girl trusted him in everything had made him soft about the subject. She always refused to see him. When his fury had cooled, he had often asked to see how she was doing and to rebuild something of what they had. But his son Seki said that there was no repairing what had happened so all Sho could do was wait and ask. The only progress they had was on the anniversary of Sayuri's mother's death about fifty years ago. He had waited for her to visit her mother's grave monument and though she did not speak to him, she stood in silence as they both paid their respect. She seemed hollow ... aloof ... but what did he expect after having alienated her for so many years.

And now, what will happen should Randell come for his revenge. Marcus was not the only one in a predicament. There were jackals all around him but he could not show any sign of weakness.

"Honor is still a living belief in our clan. If vengeance finds me, then let it be for the wrongs I have done to my own flesh. For that reason alone, the alliance will still hold no matter the consequence. I am sure that will be honored and I know my daughter, as well as my son, are strong enough to ensure the the Ueda clan will continue to be an alliance the Torelles can depend on."

He half hated this pandering but again it was necessary. After this meeting he would have to convince his daughter to speak to him. There was much they had to discuss and more eggshells he had to walk around. Though there was some amusement in the thought that perhaps now a Torelle would be his death instead of someone in his own house.

So the games truly did begin. Sho Ueda made an effort to point out Sayuri’s place at his son’s side. There was little he wished to discuss about Randell’s empire growing In the United States. Marcus had created his own vast kingdom in Europe, and knew that few powers would dare rival him unless they wished to feel the tip of his sword. He was a master vampire by every means of the word, and his son’s legacy had created a fear of the Torrelle Clan that was vengeful and deliberate. For hundreds of years, no one had dared cross them, for fear of what the Death Weilders would bring upon them.
“I have heard reports of your family’s dealings in the states. And I am aware of your daughter’s place at my son’s side. “
At that moment, the door to the chambers opened, and Marcus turned to see his beloved wife entering the room. Things were going to get rather interesting now. Although Marcus had a handle on things in this conference, he was rather amused that his wife would now be joining them. If Sho Ueda had any fears of dealing with Marcus, there would be no telling what his wife’s presence would create.

“In fact, that is one of the many issues we need to discuss, Ueda. Despite your attempts to keep hidden the barbaric treatment of Sayuri from public eye, our clan knows the details. And to be frank, we are far from pleased.”

Marcus’s words put a grin on his wife’s face. Despite Marcus’s willingness to keep the alliance with Ueda clan, his wife would have soon had the clan wiped out. A mixed bag of emotions, his wife one moment was tormenting their son for his lengthy betrayals of abandoning the clan, the next ready to avenge a girl who became her son’s lover. A delicate complex creature.

“Before we discuss further our exchanges involving Set, our domestic policies are rather in turmoil. I do not understand the punishment your daughter received due to my son’s reluctance to marry. These centuries, our clans have had a prosperous alliance. Now, you have placed me in an awkward position. My son fancies your daughter now, and if he learns your clan’s treatment of your daughter…”

Marcus’s words were cut quickly by the interruption of his wife. “My son is far less forgiving than I am, Sho Ueda. If he wishes vengeance for her abuse… we cannot promise the outcome.”

And so their dance was to begin. The head of the Torelle clan was never easy to read and through the centuries despite his own feelings of being dismissed as minor, Sho honored the alliance since he was profitable. He knew full well that his reach and influence did not compare to the Torelles but despite his greed, he found his own quiet satisfaction in the knowledge that he control and power. If only his children were so easy to keep in line.

"We have watched and fought through the years. But as you so keenly pointed out, more action is required. We have kept our holdings intact and free of any of Set's influence. Unfortunately, my clan is limited in what we are allowed to do with laws the way they are today. And I would not presume to send my men into territories that we have no influence in. As always, our clan's resources, whatever they may be, we willing share to those that we are aligned with. Swords are not as popular as they were during our time, but we still have families that are versed in the ancient honorable Japanese art of blacksmithing. As you well know, we have holdings in a number of companies so be it men or weapons, we have the capability to provide those to you."

He paused as he let his words sink into though as always Marcus showed no emotion except perhaps for that typical air of wanting this meeting to be concluded.

"My son is currently in the Americas. I know that he is working to establish a few more positions in that continent, particularly in South America. The jungles are vast though my clan is comfortable in such surroundings. Though I have heard much activity further north. I've heard that you've had dealings with your son lately. ... As well as my daughter ...."

Marcus walked the halls of his great estate, passing by the servants who had prepared for his meeting with the head of the Ueda clan. An age old alliance between two powerful families, created centuries ago when they were the most fear leaders in the known world. But that was long before the findings of the new world, or the advancements of modern technology. In truth, Marcus did not know why he had kept the alliance so long, considering their old ways were being replaced so rapidly. There were greater allies to be had now, those who could offer so much more. Perhaps he kept them as allies rather than having to make them enemies and wipe another dynasty from existence. He was confident that if the Ueda clan went to war with the Torrelles, than Asia would lose a powerful vampire clan.

Marcus stepped into the chambers where his servant had set up the communications array. The large flat panel screen already displayed the image of clan’s leader, Sho Ueda. Even though they were hundreds of miles apart, this gave them the ability to gaze into each other’s eyes while they discussed business. Marcus had little time for formalities, so he was rather pleased that the pleasantries had been skipped.

“Sho Ueda. The war with Set has spilled out of the shadows and is now in the forefront of every immortal from east to west. His forces amass in Africa and Eastern Europe. Their influences, however… are spreading much further.”

Marcus was curious as to see what exactly Sho Ueda was willing to offer toward the fight against Set. Although he didn’t feel the Ueda clan would be a deciding factor in the war, useful soldiers were not to be dismissed as invaluable. Even as recon assets, their able bodies would add to their efforts. Only time would tell if they were worth the trouble.

“You ask how I propose to deal with the Set? My question for you, is what steps are you prepared to take, Sho? My people are already fighting battles on three continents.”

Sho Ueda tapped on the arm rest of the large black leather chair as assistants practically roamed about the room. Some were laying out refreshments for the meeting while the others were ensuring that the virtual connection for the meeting was operating at optimum capacity. He leaned back on his chair, not acknowledging the presence of anyone around him as he mulled over the events that brought him to this situation.

His errant daughter had once more changed the course of things, though for once, he was hoping that he could use this to his advantage. She had been a constant source of shame for him for centuries and nothing more than an idiot pet for his son. Not that Seki was a beacon of pride for him either, especially since as of late, his son had taken to his own underhanded dealings and typically spends half of the year in the United States than in Japan. They had their own share of arguments and Sho had half a mind that perhaps his younger son should rule when he decided to retire. Shingo liked to do things more to tradition despite his fascination with technology. At least his younger son's obsessions were easier to understand compared to Sho who liked to collect things that were not "normal."

He sighed as he felt a headache coming. He closed his eyes and took a few moments to push his worries aside. He had to think about the clans position now. How his eldest daughter's exploits in the state of Philadelphia has made her a public image not just in that corner of the United States but in the circles of the vampire clans.

He looked up when he felt someone approach him, giving a slight bow as he was informed that the meeting was about to start. Sure enough the screen changed from blue to the familiar halls of the Torelle clan and almost ceremoniously Marcus entered the room.

"Marcus ... It has been a long time since we've talked. And I thank you for argreeing to meet. I know that your schedule can be as busy as mine." He said with some respect. "You'll forgive me if I dispense with some of the formalities. I'm sure you already know what I wish to discuss. This war with Set ... Given what I have been told, it is not something that can be avoided and I wish to know how you are proposing we deal with the event when it happens."
